6 Links January 28th, 2008

Close to the corner of Swanston Street and Little Flinders it’s a nice basement bar which some great furniture and good selection of drinks with carlton draught, asahi, pure blonde on tap.

To be honest the seating isn’t that great, it’s a little to much form over function but there is enough standing room for it to not matter too much.

I didn’t have a camera this night, but they have a website at http://www.6links.com.au/ which has better pictures.
From what I have heard is that the drinks are set at a good price and it doesn’t get too crowded, a good combination.

Napier Hotel September 17th, 2006

Helped a friend move house on the weekend and as much as this troubled me I did get to experience a new eatery.

I reckon that the Fitzroy area provides some pretty good feeds for your money and the The Napier Hotel is no exception, located in the back streets of Fitzroy opposite the town hall we were able to take a leisurely stroll on a very balmy night.

Walking in you are greeted with a cosy social area to the right and left while walking ahead you get to the outside area, which is where we had dinner. The menu had a great selection at a great price, I had my chicken Schnitzel for 11.50. The serving was more the ample, I wasn’t able to finish it which made me feel a little guilty. I think that two people would easily be able to share one meal with out any problems.

I didn’t get much of a chance to spend any more time in the pub but I think that at any other time of the day it would be no less inviting.

mothersMilk June 21st, 2006

mothersMilk, now that’s an odd enough name in its self but the place is great even if the location is a bit out of the way from the main party section of chapel street but don’t let that deter you because the bar/lounge as a great feel as you walk in. The use of colours is great, deep reds and dark tones lend a very understated confidence.

I was only fortunate enough to have a few drinks with a mate so I didn’t get the full tour, but at this time of year we had a great gas fireplace to sit in front of and just chat, there is a decent drinks selection from wine to beers, even my favourite Asahi, large generous couches and chairs dot the place so you can relax and enjoy the poison of your choice.
The location from my point of view is good because I’m not quite one of those types who likes to hang out in the Chapel street area and once being a local resident of Windsor would have found it great to have some place like this to go for a chat or a quick beer with a couple of mates.

Three Below May 21st, 2006

Three Below is little a bar that is located at the city square.
City Square
Shop 3 Ground floor
44-86 Swanston St
Melbourne 3000 VIC

The place is rather cosy, and by cosy I don’t mean cramped or small, which is it, but clever use stools and little nooks and well designed seating spaces, lighting and outdoor space. The sections of stained glass are also a nice touch which gives it a different feel, I was impressed at although how every small it was it didn’t feel that way.

Yak Bar May 21st, 2006

Yak Bar & Food
Yak Bar is located pretty much on the corner of Flinders Lane and Russel Street (although you enter through Flinders Lane).

There isn’t anything pretencions about the place which I like and it’s not overly large, but big enough.

I didn’t get a chance to sample the food menu but from I heard from friends it was great at a reasonable price, I haven’t had a chance to try any Tapas since I got back from Spain, but my experience there wasn’t that great anyway.

Tryst Bar May 6th, 2006

One of the most unassuming bars that I have been to, it’s tucked into a side street just off Chapel Street, I almost walked straight passed the place, the entrance is the front porch of a normal house that has been converted to a bar.

The first thing that you see is the bar where you may pleasantly grab a drink of your choice and then wonder around to see the various areas such as the dance floor, the back room and the beer garden. Which in the past would have been living areas and the normal garden, but now have a funky twist.

The Croft Institute March 13th, 2006

Finally got the chance to go and check out The Croft Institute, i had heard so much about it, getting there was interesting and questionable at times but fear is alleviated when you reach the end of the ally and you find it there.

The first floor is the most interesting part of the venue with the beakers and test tubes and various other laboratory equipment, I liked it because it was different and smaller than i expected.

The second floor is were you will find the male and female hygiene departments…aka toilets.

The third floor is the dance floor with the fabled grass bar were they serve the drinks.

Maybe it was the fact that it was a Saturday night or I had way too many drinks to be truly objective, but I wasn’t all the impressed, the music was forgettable and the drinks I thought would have been more interesting, but they were pretty run on the mill. I didn’t really feel the vibe that I thought I would get.
